Chapter Thirteen

Harlow

I spin in my seat, hand against the dash, and look at Bastian with wide eyes as he drives like a maniac. “Who were those guys?” I ask. My earlier buzz is gone, replaced by fear and confusion.

“Are you okay?”

My shoulders relax when he slows down a little. “Yeah, how about you?” It’s dim, but I can see his cheek and chin are scraped. And, his knuckles. But, they’re always messed up from fighting.

“Fine,” he mumbles.

“Did you know them?”

“Not exactly,” he answers carefully.

He knows something, I think. “What’s that supposed to mean?”

“I know one of them. They’re a couple of Angelo Savini’s guys.”

“Who’s that?”

Bastian lets out a long sigh and rakes a hand through his hair. “You’re not going to like what I’m about to tell you. But, I’m done lying.”

My heart sinks. He’s been lying to me? I fucking knew it was too good to be true.

“I don’t know exactly how to tell you this.”

“Just tell me the truth, Bastian. Please.”

He pulls the car over, puts it in park and turns, studying me closely. “Not long ago, I ended up owing this guy named Angelo a lot of money. I placed some bad bets and ten grand later, I had no way to pay him back.”

I listen carefully and so far nothing he says surprises me. Or alarms me. I know Bastian’s been involved with all sorts of shady people and activities. “Go on,” I say.

“I thought I could pay him off by fighting. If I win, I can maybe make a grand on a good night.” I pause, swipe a hand across my scraped-up knuckles. “The night we met, I won the top cash prize. Defeated some guy named Tiger who didn’t take it too well. It wasn’t a normal fight, though, because we had to use knives.”

“Oh, my God,” I whisper.

“Anyway, he followed me over to Platinum Security, attacked me and stole the cash.”

Suddenly, it all comes together and I remember hearing the scuffle, the broken front door and Bastian laying on the sidewalk with a knife wound. “So, you knew your attackers?”

He nods. “I said I didn’t because I didn’t want to upset Jax. I also didn’t want a lecture.” His gaze meets mine. “It also gave me a reason to talk to you.”

“And, now you don’t have enough money to pay this Angelo back?”

“Right. So, he made me an offer.”

“Which was what?” I ask. A wave of unease passes through me.

His gaze drops and his hands tighten into fists. “See, this is where I really wanna lie.”

“Tell me the truth, Bastian.” I lay a hand over his and he looks into my eyes and I know I’m not going to like what he says. “Please.”

He sighs, but holds my gaze, flips his hand and laces his fingers through mine. “Angelo offered me a deal. He’d forgive my debt if…”

I wait for him to tell me, but he clams up. Then, he swoops in over the console and captures my mouth in a kiss. I part my lips, slide my tongue along his and moan.
