Chapter Thirteen
Harlow
I spin in my seat, hand against the dash, and look at Bastian with wide eyes as he drives like a maniac. âWho were those guys?â I ask. My earlier buzz is gone, replaced by fear and confusion.
âAre you okay?â
My shoulders relax when he slows down a little. âYeah, how about you?â Itâs dim, but I can see his cheek and chin are scraped. And, his knuckles. But, theyâre always messed up from fighting.
âFine,â he mumbles.
âDid you know them?â
âNot exactly,â he answers carefully.
He knows something, I think. âWhatâs that supposed to mean?â
âI know one of them. Theyâre a couple of Angelo Saviniâs guys.â
âWhoâs that?â
Bastian lets out a long sigh and rakes a hand through his hair. âYouâre not going to like what Iâm about to tell you. But, Iâm done lying.â
My heart sinks. Heâs been lying to me? I fucking knew it was too good to be true.
âI donât know exactly how to tell you this.â
âJust tell me the truth, Bastian. Please.â
He pulls the car over, puts it in park and turns, studying me closely. âNot long ago, I ended up owing this guy named Angelo a lot of money. I placed some bad bets and ten grand later, I had no way to pay him back.â
I listen carefully and so far nothing he says surprises me. Or alarms me. I know Bastianâs been involved with all sorts of shady people and activities. âGo on,â I say.
âI thought I could pay him off by fighting. If I win, I can maybe make a grand on a good night.â I pause, swipe a hand across my scraped-up knuckles. âThe night we met, I won the top cash prize. Defeated some guy named Tiger who didnât take it too well. It wasnât a normal fight, though, because we had to use knives.â
âOh, my God,â I whisper.
âAnyway, he followed me over to Platinum Security, attacked me and stole the cash.â
Suddenly, it all comes together and I remember hearing the scuffle, the broken front door and Bastian laying on the sidewalk with a knife wound. âSo, you knew your attackers?â
He nods. âI said I didnât because I didnât want to upset Jax. I also didnât want a lecture.â His gaze meets mine. âIt also gave me a reason to talk to you.â
âAnd, now you donât have enough money to pay this Angelo back?â
âRight. So, he made me an offer.â
âWhich was what?â I ask. A wave of unease passes through me.
His gaze drops and his hands tighten into fists. âSee, this is where I really wanna lie.â
âTell me the truth, Bastian.â I lay a hand over his and he looks into my eyes and I know Iâm not going to like what he says. âPlease.â
He sighs, but holds my gaze, flips his hand and laces his fingers through mine. âAngelo offered me a deal. Heâd forgive my debt ifâ¦â
I wait for him to tell me, but he clams up. Then, he swoops in over the console and captures my mouth in a kiss. I part my lips, slide my tongue along his and moan.
